Guy William Eves

Suffolk born Guy William Eves has had drawing in his blood since a very early age, converting an old draughty garden shed into a studio and spending many a childhood hour there until the cold set in.

Guy studied Graphic Design at Ipswich School of Art in the 70’s. His career began at the prestigious Oxford University Press before he joined an advertising agency, finally returning to Ipswich in 1987 to set up his own freelance design and illustration practice.

In 2009 Guy was elected as a painting member of The Chelsea Physic Garden Florilegium Society, becoming a Fellow of the Society in 2013. His work appears in its latest publication, 'Botanical Illustration from Chelsea Physic Garden'. Guy is also the Editor of the society newsletter.

In 2011, he was elected as full member of the Society of Botanical Artists, having received a Highly Commended Award at the Society's Open Show in 2010. At the 2011 SBA Open Show he gained The President's Award for his whole body of work in media other than watercolour. He was awarded a Certificate of Botanical Merit in 2011, 2015, 2022 and 2023.

Guy is a tutor on the Society of Botanical Artists Distant Learning Diploma Course and is also a contributor to the book 'Botanical Painting with the Society of Botanical Artists' in the chapters on drawing techniques.

Royal College of Physicians

The Illustrated College Herbal. Plants from the Pharmacopoea Londinensis of 1618. Published May 2018

With this book the Gardeners and the Garden Fellows of the Medicinal Garden of the Royal College of Physicians of London celebrate the 400th anniversary of the College’s publication of the Pharmacopoea (sic) Londinensis in May 1618. This was published to provide the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries, newly formed in November 1617, with a single, simple standard for the formulation of medicines, rather than the plethora of different pharmacopoeias then available.

Carum carvi - Carum is one of the book's 200 plates ranging from watercolours on paper and vellum, pencil drawings and lithographs to pen and ink and late medieval woodcuts of the plants in the College’s Medicinal Garden, with contemporary uses and modern names.

‘During my first visit to the Chelsea Physic Garden, The Fernery caught my attention. The fabulous variety of shapes, forms and structures of these beautiful plants sent me straight into drawing mode and I have been gradually working my way through, illustrating as many specimens as possible for the Florilegium archive. I love to observe and capture the individual nature and textures of each plant with a detailed study and ferns lend themselves to this in abundance’
